What a wonderful training!

At times, there was a lot of reading...but we are library people and reading is part of everyday life...don't grumble about it...just do it!

Chances are you learned something really neat from all these weeks of training.

I would definitely participate in a follow-up or related training in the future.

Thing # 29 Web 2.0 summary

Hey,

Well...I made it...Only two blog posts left and what a fun, informative, and at times frustrating project Web 2.0 turned out to be. Likes-Blogging, Image generators, finding new sites
Dislikes- dead links, blocks by internet filtering-(these two dislikes though have nothing to do with the program itself-so no dislikes would really be more accurate)

Web 2.0 is a wonderful training and it exposed me to new websites, as well as refreshed my memory on some sites that I was already familiar with. This training does encourage lifelong learning and I am glad that it was offered to us. Read, write, blog...express yourself...

Thing # 28 Hello.....Rollyo

Hey all,

I have been exploring the search engine of sorts known as Rollyo...A very interesting site, however I had trouble finding the uniqueness of the site...Rollyo is a search engine combined with the bookmarking capabilities of De.lic.ious. I'm sure that this site is practical for some, but at a public library..I don't see the necessity...However, at an academic library, Rollyo would prove helpful as it stores previous searches.

Nevertheless, please visit the www.rollyo.com to explore the site...it is important for us all to know what is out there...

Hey all,

Well, the web just keeps getting better and better. Latest discovery... you can catalog your library online. So much easier than keeping a list. The lifetime fee is reasonable too, only $25.00 for life. Catalog, tag, review....make connections with other book lovers...check it out....I can see myself spending LOTS of time on this site...totally fun for a library girl like myself!

Podcasts and video casts are the way of the future! Libraries can market the collection, as well as promote programs over the WWW. The key is making the videos and podcasts interesting enough to draw your audience.

Hey all,

Podcasting is well, to be very general...great. It is definitely something cool to download to your iPod. There are several search engines to locate podcasts, and I'm sure that they are wonderful...However, I am unable to access two out of the three sites due to filtering on City computers.

The one that I could access was Yahoo..and this site worked just like a regular web search. Overall, no super-impressive features of the Yahoo site, but that's alright because the information is returned properly.

Hey all,

Ok....so YouTube is one of the best websites ever!! You can find almost anything on this wonderous site. Again, tagging is key to good cataloging of videos. Below is a GREAT video...although it may be a one-hit wonder...Have fun searching...may I suggest the 1965 performance of Turn, Turn, Turn by the Byrds...great stuff!!

Hey all,

So the fun does not stop with posting and tagging on Flickr. There are some sites where you can do even more fun things with photos.

Montagr is a site where you can type in a keyword and get a mosaic image. This is very useful say for example if you are a Clay Aiken fan and want numerous pictures of him...Kitty has already discovered this though...so all you Clay fans out there are one step behind. Proper tagging is definitely the key for this site.

Flickr color pick is neat as well. Let's say that you like everything to match and are looking for that perfect baby blue image. You can select the perfect shade on this site, however, it does not appear that you can search for images. Rather, you are limited to the ones that pop up when a color is selected.

Tagging is a fun and useful option of Flickr. Think about it, as you tag...you are including your photos in a world-wide group. Someone may search for 'Library' and may come across your page...What a great way to market new materials and library services! The possibilities are numerous!

So, have you ever visited Flickr.com? If your answer is no, my question for you is "What are you waiting for?" Flickr is a wonderful site for photo storage and sharing. Similar sites are Photo Bucket, Slide, MySpace, Facebook etc.
On Flickr, you can tag, catalog, and sort pictures. Check it out!

Hey all you bloggers out there! This post's topic focuses on blog news and Technorati.com.

So, initially I was overwhelmed by this site....to be more specific the site put me into sensory overload. However, upon closer examination of the site, I found that the website content is interesting and useful. I have not been to another website which focuses specifically on news from blogs.

I liked the feature "Tags from what's rising." This section focuses on hot trends and information. Here, you can find out what's popular...anything from Barack Obama to Nintendo Wii...

So tagging and social bookmarking...You might ask what's that? Well..in today's technologically advanced world, these term are becoming more and more mainstream. The great thing about Del.icio.us is that no longer are your bookmarks stored on one hard drive, but they are accessible from any computer as long as there is internet access...Ah, gotta love the 21st Century!

Purpose
Virginia Beach Public Library blogs support the library’s mission by
• Initiating and extending conversations with internal and external customers
• Collecting input and feedback about ways to improve and/or add services desired
or expected from our customers
• Eliminating geographical barriers to interacting with people of similar interests
• Encouraging innovation and collaborative learning
Library blogs may be either public or private. Public blogs serve as the corporate voice
of the Library Department. They also provide staff and customers with an open channel
of communication. Private blogs are strictly for internal communication within teams,
groups and agencies. They are not intended to be an official channel of communication
between the Library Department and the public. All library blogs will adhere to the
following policy:

Policy
The Library Department supports the use of weblog or blog technology to promote
internal and external communication and to encourage innovation and collaborative
learning among staff.

The policy is aligned with the Library Department’s Achieving A Vision of Lifelong
Learning: A Three Year Plan of Action FY 2006-2008. The Strategic Plan of the
Virginia Beach Public Library and the Library Executive Team provide guidance for the
development of new services and methods of service delivery.
Acceptable Use for All Library Department blogs

Blogger – a person or persons who posts to or updates a blog. They may or may not be

Content – any graphics, video, audio, text or links that appear on a blog or in a blog post.
Comment – a blog post which is time stamped and identified by the author and or a link
to their Web site or blog. Comments may be threaded so that readers can comment on
other comments; most blog comments are displayed chronologically.
Post – an entry or update added to a blog.
Questionable Content – Content in any format including but not limited to text, images,

This post we explore Blog Bridge, the number 3 winner in the Feed management category of the Web 2.0 awards. Blog Bridge may be accessed at http://www.blogbridge.com/

A definite competitor of Google Reader, Blog Bridge does require a download, but it is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux. A great feature of this site is the Top 100 blogs link. From the list of 100, you can easily add RSS feeds from one place. While the basic version of Blog Bridge is free, you can pay for a more extensive version with enhanced options.

Neat site to explore, and nice to know that you can comparison shop RSS feed readers.

Thing # 16- MySpace a breakdown

Hey all,

MySpace is definitely something that teens spend a lot of time with. Think about it...what is more fun than keeping in touch with your friends? I have found that it is easy to create an account, post pictures, and edit profiles. The fun part is finding your perfect song and updating your status to let all your friends know how you are.

Way to go Tom...great idea...if only Myspace had the options like Facebook...now that would be interesting :)

Wikis are an interesting place to record information. However, in order to be used in a library setting, there would have to be a moderator devoted to checking the imformation for validity and accuracy. Interesting idea though...I think that the wiki format may be better served when applied to RA purposes.

Thing #10 Searching for Feeds??

This blog's topic: RSS feeds and searching

Like a certain topic, but don't know where to go for an RSS feed??...Well, there are some options out there to help!

Syndic8.com is user-friendly and is able to locate feeds from wrestling to Pizza franchises to Italian fashion...let your imagination run free! Search results come back with not only the RSS feed link, but other useful information such as date created, date feed was last changed, status of link (working or not), and language feed is in. Also,...for all you number lovers out there, there is statistics about the search engine itself.

Topix.com is a bit more "busy" than Syndic8 (the homepage has a lot going on), but nonetheless Topix is an formidable search engine. Instead of providing just links to the direct RSS feed, results tend to include articles. While not as direct as Syndic8, the site is worth a browse.

Thing # 9 RSS and newsreaders

Hey all,

Back with more Library 2.0 thoughts. This blog's topic: RSS and Newsreaders

So, I had no idea what RSS meant before the training for Web 2.0...embarrassing maybe...but I admit it. I am amazed at how many sites have this feature available. Sure, you expect major news networks to have a feed, but even the History Channel has feeds to choose from. The World Wide Web is such an amazing place...and it's changing and growing every second.

I have been using Google Reader and love that all my news is in one place. No longer do I have to bookmark articles and websites. I also like that you can star articles to make returning to them easier. The Trends option is cool too...Google Reader is set up so that you can see not only how many articles you have read, but the time at which you read them...not that this information is vital to our survival...but stats are always fun!

Libraries can, and should use these newsreaders and RSS feeds to improve customer service. Mostly, I see these newsreaders popular in an academic setting, though. However, in a public library setting these readers can be used to keep up with library trends and ideas for the collection...Imagine all reviews in one place.

7 and 1/2 lifelong learning habits

Hey all you library bloggers out there.

This blog's topic: The 7 and 1/2 habits for lifelong learning.

After viewing this video training, I believe that the easiest habit for me to remember is not a single habit, but rather a combination of habits. I accept responsibility for my own learning, and have confidence in myself and the goals I have set. (Habits # 2, 4 and 1, respectively)

I don't really see any of the habits as being difficult to perform, but I would have to say that seeing problems as challenges is an important tip to keep in mind. (Habit #3) As with anything, a positive attitude goes a long way.

Well, I am a big fan of OCLC World Cat, so when I heard this database named in a Web 2.0 article, I was drawn in. Web 2.0 is an interactive experience and is well on its way to becoming a one-stop shop atmosphere. Now libraries have to spend more time brainstorming about making more information available to the masses.
